What Is the Normal Photo Size?
The normal photo size is 4 × 6 inches (10.2 × 15.2 cm, also called 4R). It is the regular picture size that labs and home photo printers default to and the standard photograph size for albums and frames, and this standard size of photograph matches the 3:2 shape of most cameras, so nothing gets cropped. So whether you are wondering what size is a regular photo, what is the standard picture size, what is a standard photo size or what’s a normal size photo, the short answer is 4×6.
Beyond 4×6, standard photo printing sizes run from tiny to huge: wallet prints (2.5 × 3.5 in) and 2 × 2 in passport photos, 5 × 7 and 8 × 10 for frames, 11 × 14 and 16 × 20 for wall art, and 18 × 24, 20 × 30 or 24 × 36 for posters. Traditional photo sizes such as 3.5 × 5 are still around, and most of the world uses A-series paper (A6, A5, A4, A3) and metric photo sizes in cm such as 10 × 15, 13 × 18 and 20 × 25 cm.
Two numbers decide whether a size works for your picture: its aspect ratio, which sets how much of the photo is cropped, and its pixel count, which sets how sharp it prints. The studio above shows both for every size, and the photo sizes chart below lists all the different picture sizes and standard picture dimensions in one place.

Photograph print sizes are written short side × long side (portrait); swap them for landscape. Metric values are rounded. For 240 DPI multiply the inches by 240, for 150 DPI by 150.
How to Change Photo Size for Printing
Here is how to change picture dimensions to fit print photo sizes exactly, without stretching the photo. Photo print sizing takes four steps.
01
Pick a Print Photo Size
Choose one of 18 standard printing sizes for photos, from wallet and 2×2 to 24×36 and A3. For each standard size picture you instantly see the size in inches, cm and mm, its aspect ratio, and the pixels you need at 300, 240 and 150 DPI.
02
Upload Your Photo
Add a JPG, PNG or WebP. The crop frame locks to the shape of the print in portrait or landscape, and a quality badge tells you whether the photo has enough pixels to print sharp at that size.
03
Drag and Zoom to Frame It
Move the frame, drag a corner or pinch to zoom, or choose Fit whole photo to keep every edge with a white border. That is how to change size of picture files for print without squashing faces.
04
Download a Print or a Print Sheet
Save a JPG or PNG at the exact pixel size with the DPI written into the file, or tile wallet, 2×2 and 2×3 copies onto a 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 8.5×11 or A4 sheet with cut lines.
Photo Print Size Comparison, Cropping and Print Sheets
More than a static photo print size chart: compare sizes to scale, see what gets cropped, and print exactly what you need.
Compare Photo Print Sizes to Scale
Switch to All sizes to stack the most common photo print sizes from one corner, from a wallet size print up to a 24×36 poster (the full range of photography print sizes), or to compare A4 with US Letter. These photo print sizes examples are drawn to one scale, so you see how big each size really is next to the others; tap any of the examples of picture sizes to select it.
How Big Is a 4×6 Photo? See It at Real-Life Scale
Real-life scale puts the print next to a credit card, a 6.1-inch phone and an A4 or Letter sheet, all at the same scale, so you judge the size of prints against things you know. A 4×6 is about the size of a postcard, a wallet print is a little bigger than a credit card, and an 8×10 nearly covers a sheet of printer paper.
Crop Any Photo to an Exact Print Size
Print sizes for photos rarely match the camera: a camera photo is 3:2 and a phone photo is usually 4:3, so different picture sizes crop them differently. The studio shows which photos fit without cropping, then gives you a frame locked to the shape of the print. Download it at 300, 240 or 150 DPI with real pixel dimensions, such as 1500 × 2100 px for a 5×7.
Print Sheets for Wallet, 2×2 and Other Small Photo Print Sizes
Picture sizes smaller than 4x6 are cheaper to print several at a time. Tile wallet, 2×2 passport, 2×3 or 3×5 copies onto a 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 8.5×11 or A4 sheet, set the margin and gap, and download it with dashed cut lines. Eight wallets fit on one 8×10.
Which Photos Fit Each Print Size Without Cropping
Aspect ratio is the shape of a print. When it matches your photo nothing is cropped; when it does not, an edge is trimmed. Here is how the common picture dimensions compare with camera and phone photos.

Best Size for Photo Prints, by Use
Not sure what size to print? These typical photo print sizes are the most popular photo sizes and regular pic sizes people order, and each one has a job.
Albums and Everyday Prints: 4×6
The normal size photo prints you get from any lab and the most common size photo prints in albums. They fit slip-in frames and postcards, and match 3:2 camera photos with no cropping.
Desk Frames and Cards: 5×7
A step up from 4×6 for framed gifts, invitations and greeting cards. It trims a little off a 3:2 photo.
Portraits and Headshots: 8×10
Of all portrait picture sizes, 8×10 is the classic for frames and school photos; 5×7 and 11×14 are the other popular portrait print sizes. Leave room around the head, since 8×10 trims the long side.
Wall Art: 11×14 to 16×20
Common large print sizes for living rooms and gallery walls, and the best size for photos of groups or landscapes. Use a photo of at least 3300 × 4200 px for a sharp 11×14.
Posters: 18×24, 20×30 and 24×36
Standard large photo sizes for posters and events. They are seen from a distance, so 150 DPI is usually enough.
Wallets and IDs: 2.5×3.5 and 2×2
Pocket size photo dimensions for wallets, plus the 2×2 in passport photo. Print several on one sheet and cut them out.
Cards and Recipes: 3×5
Index-card size for greeting cards, recipe cards and small albums. It is a little narrower than a camera photo.
Home Printing: 8.5×11 and A4
Letter and A4 paper hold one 8×10 or several smaller prints. Most home printers need a margin, so tile small photos as a print sheet.
Quick Answers About Regular Photo Sizes
Short answers to the questions people ask most about photo sizes.
What Are Photo Sizes Measured In?
Inches in the US and centimeters almost everywhere else, short side first: common photo sizes in inches are 4×6, 5×7 and 8×10, or 10 × 15 cm in metric. Photograph sizes in inches or cm describe the paper; pixels describe the file.
What Size Is a Normal Photo Print?
Ask what size are photographs from a lab, or what size are regular photos, and the answer is 4 × 6 in (10.2 × 15.2 cm): the size of a regular picture print, the normal photo printing size and the usual photo size for albums. In metric countries the standard printed photo size is 10 × 15 cm.
What Is the Average Picture Size?
The average printed photo size is still 4×6, with 5×7 next. Average picture sizes on walls run from 11×14 to 16×20, and the average picture print size in a desk frame is 5×7.
What Sizes Do Pictures Come In?
Regular photo sizes are small (wallet, 2×2, 3×5), standard (4×6, 5×7, 8×10) or large (11×14 to 24×36), plus A sizes, and the most common picture sizes are 4×6, 5×7 and 8×10. All these various photo sizes are in the chart above.
What Is a Typical Photo Size From a Phone?
What is average photo size in pixels? A 12 MP phone photo is 4032 × 3024 px (4:3), enough for a sharp print of about 10 × 13 in at 300 DPI, or a 4×6 with plenty to spare.
What Is the Most Common Photo Print Size?
4×6. And what is the normal print size for a photo in a frame? 5×7 for desks and 8×10 for walls. These normal print sizes are the typical print sizes stores sell and match the standard size of picture frames.
What Is the Regular Photo Size for a Passport?
2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) in the US. Many other countries use 35 × 45 mm, so check the official rules for your document before printing.
What Are Common Picture Sizes for Walls?
11×14, 16×20, 18×24 and 24×36. Pick a common picture size your photo has enough pixels for: about 3300 × 4200 px for a sharp 11×14.
What Is a 4R Photo?
4R is the R-series name for 4×6, the photo standard size in much of Asia. 4R photo dimensions are 4 × 6 in (102 × 152 mm); 5R is 5×7 and 8R is 8×10.
What Is a Card Size Photo?
Card size photo dimensions usually mean wallet size: 2.5 × 3.5 in (64 × 89 mm), the size of a playing card.
What Is a Regular Size Photo Print?
The regular picture print size is 4 × 6 in in North America and 10 × 15 cm almost everywhere else, the same 2:3 shape. And what is a regular size picture for a frame? Usually 5×7 or 8×10.
What Are Normal Photo Sizes for Albums?
Albums take 4×6 and 5×7 slip-in pockets, and portrait albums often hold 8×10. Photo books print to their own page sizes.

Quick answers about standard photo sizes, pixels and printing.
4 × 6 inches (10.2 × 15.2 cm) is the standard size photo print almost everywhere and the size of regular photo prints from labs, kiosks and home printers. People ask it in many ways (what is standard photo size, what size are standard photo prints, what is a standard size photo, what is normal picture size, what is regular photo size, what is the regular picture size, what size is a standard photo), and the answer is always 4×6. In metric countries the nearly identical 10 × 15 cm print plays the same role.
Ask what are standard picture sizes or what are standard size photo prints and you get the same list. The most common photo sizes are wallet (2.5 × 3.5 in), 4 × 6, 5 × 7, 8 × 10, 11 × 14, 16 × 20, 18 × 24, 20 × 30 and 24 × 36 inches, plus 2 × 2 in passport photos; the most popular picture sizes vary a little by country. In metric countries A6, A5, A4 and A3 and photo sizes such as 10 × 15, 13 × 18 and 20 × 30 cm are just as common. The chart above lists the sizes of photographs in inches, cm, mm and pixels.
Almost. 10 × 15 cm is 100 × 150 mm, while 6 × 4 in, the size of a standard photograph in the US, is 101.6 × 152.4 mm, so 4×6 is about 2 mm larger each way. Both have the same 2:3 shape, labs treat them as the same print, and they fit the same frames and albums.
For photo sizing for printing, multiply the print size in inches by 300 for a sharp print viewed up close: 1200 × 1800 px for 4×6, 1500 × 2100 px for 5×7 and 2400 × 3000 px for 8×10. 240 DPI still looks sharp for most photo prints, and posters seen from a few feet away are fine at 150 DPI. On screens, a thumbnail image size is set in pixels only (for example 1280 × 720), so DPI does not matter there.
Crop it to the aspect ratio of the print instead of resizing it freely. Upload the photo above and pick the size: the crop frame locks to the right shape, so faces never get squashed. If you would rather keep the whole picture, choose Fit whole photo to add a white border. Either way you download a file at the exact pixel size: the simplest way to modify photo size for print, and how to change picture sizes without distortion.
Pick 2×2 or Wallet, frame the photo, then choose Print sheet. The studio tiles as many copies as fit on a 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 8.5×11 or A4 sheet (six 2×2 photos on a 4×6, eight wallets on an 8×10) with dashed cut lines. The 2×2 head guide follows the US rule of a 1 to 1⅜ in head, but always check the official photo rules for your document.
Most labs start at wallet size (2.5 × 3.5 in) or 2 × 2 in, and many sell 2 × 3 in mini prints. Smaller ID photos, such as 1 × 1.5 in, are printed several to a sheet and cut out, which is what the print sheet option is for. On contact sheets, a thumbnail picture size of about 1 × 1.5 in is common.
Prints with the same aspect ratio as the photo. DSLR and mirrorless photos (3:2) fit 4×6, 12×18, 20×30 and 24×36 exactly; most phone photos (4:3) fit 18×24 and 6×8; square photos fit 2×2. Any other size trims a little, and the studio shows exactly how much before you download.
Size in photography means two things: the print size in inches and the pixel size of the file. DPI (dots or pixels per inch) links them: a 1200 × 1800 px file at 300 DPI prints at 4 × 6 in. Files from this tool have the DPI written in, so print software opens them at the right physical size. Resampling up to 300 DPI sets the size but cannot add detail, so start from the largest original you have.
It is free with no sign-up. Cropping, resizing and print sheets all run in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded. Only print photos you have the right to use.
