How Big Is a 4x4 Photo? 4x4 in CM, MM and Pixels

Short answer: a 4x4 photo is 4 x 4 inches, which is 10.16 x 10.16 cm or 101.6 x 101.6 mm. It is a perfect square with a 1:1 aspect ratio, and to print it sharp at 300 DPI the file needs 1200 x 1200 pixels. In the real world, a 4x4 is about the size of a drink coaster.

Need a 4x4 file now? Open the crop tool, choose a custom size of 1200 x 1200 pixels (or the 1:1 square preset), drag the frame over the part you want, and download a file ready for any lab.

What Is a 4x4 Photo?

A 4x4 is a square print: both sides measure 4 inches. A 4x4 photo measures 4 inches x 4 inches, so it does not have a portrait or landscape orientation, and it never needs to be rotated to fit. It goes by a few names: 4x4 print, 4 by 4 photo, 4" x 4", or simply a 4 4 picture when someone types it in a hurry.

Square prints are popular because so many photos are already square: social media posts, instant-film style shots, album art and profile pictures. A 4x4 size photo also fits places a rectangle does not, like coasters, tiles, magnets and square photo books. When a lab lists a size 4x4 photo, it always means 4 x 4 inches unless it says “cm.” And if you have been wondering what size is 4x4 photo paper, the answer is the same: 4 x 4 inches, though most people print on 4x6 paper and trim it.

4x4 in cm

To convert 4x4 to centimeters, multiply each side by 2.54: 4 x 2.54 = 10.16. So 4x4 in cm is 10.16 x 10.16 cm. How big is 4 by 4 in centimeters if your lab only sells metric sizes? The nearest metric print is 10 x 10 cm, which is 1.6 mm smaller on each side; nobody will notice the difference in a frame or album.

4x4 in mm

Multiply inches by 25.4 to get millimeters: a 4x4 photo is 101.6 x 101.6 mm. Type the dimension 4x4 in (or 101.6 x 101.6 mm) when a printer driver asks for a custom paper size.

How many pixels is a 4x4 photo?

Pixels depend on how sharp you want the print. Multiply 4 inches by the DPI (dots per inch):

A typical 1080 x 1080 square post prints at 4x4 at about 270 DPI, which looks sharp at arm’s length. Any modern phone photo has several times the pixels a 4x4 needs. If your image is smaller than 600 x 600 pixels (an old scan, a screenshot or a social download), enlarge it with the photo enlarger or the image enhancer before printing.

What Does a 4x4 Picture Look Like?

The size of a 4x4 picture is bigger than you might expect from a “small square.” It is noticeably larger than an instant-film photo and roughly the size of a coaster. Here is the actual size of 4x4 next to things you have probably held:

What does a 4x4 picture look like: a 4x4 photo next to instant film, a sticky note and a CD at the same scale
Instant square film, classic instant film, a 3x3 sticky note, a 4x4 photo and a CD, drawn to the same scale
  • Instant square film: the picture area is about 2.4 inches, so a 4x4 has almost three times the area.
  • Classic instant film: the picture area is about 3.1 inches square; a 4x4 is clearly bigger.
  • Sticky note: the standard 3 x 3 inch note is a little smaller than a 4x4.
  • Drink coaster: most square coasters are about 4 inches, the same as a 4x4 print.
  • CD: a disc is 4.72 inches (12 cm) across, a bit larger than a 4x4.

On a screen, a 4x4 has no fixed size: zoom and monitor size change how big it looks. To check the real 4x4 size, print a test page at 100% scale and measure it, or hold up a coaster.

4x4 vs 4x6, 5x5 and Other Photo Sizes

A 4x4 has the same width as the classic 4x6 print but is two inches shorter, so it uses two thirds of the paper. Compared with other squares, it sits in the middle: four times the area of a 2x2 passport photo and a little over half the area of a 6x6.

Other photo sizes 4x4 prints are often ordered with: 2x2 passport photos, 4x6 snapshots and wallet prints. If you need a big square for the wall, the same 1:1 crop scales up to 8x8 or 12x12 with no new crop.

4x4 inches vs 4x4 cm

Watch the unit. A 4x4 cm photo is an ID-style picture of 40 x 40 mm, only about 1.57 x 1.57 inches, and needs roughly 472 x 472 pixels at 300 DPI. A 4x4 inch photo is more than six times bigger in area. If a form or embassy asks for “4x4,” check whether it means centimeters before you print.

How to Crop a Photo to 4x4

Because a 4x4 is square, almost every photo needs some cropping. Here is how much each common shape loses:

Cropping 3:2, 4:3, 3:4, 9:16 and square photos to a 4x4 print, with the trimmed areas shaded
Only square photos fit a 4x4 exactly; the shaded areas are trimmed from every other shape

If the lab crops for you, it usually cuts the same amount from both ends. On a tall photo, that often slices off the top of people’s heads:

Lab-style center crop: heads cut

Frame moved up: heads kept
  1. Start with the best version of your photo. Convert iPhone HEIC files with HEIC to JPG, and fix a blurry or tiny image with the image enhancer.
  2. Open the crop tool and choose the Square 1:1 preset, or a custom size of 1200 x 1200 pixels for 300 DPI.
  3. Drag and zoom the frame so faces and important details sit well inside the edges, leaving a little space above heads.
  4. Download the square file. If a lab or design app reads it as 72 DPI and shows a huge print size, set it to 300 DPI with the DPI changer; the pixels stay the same and the print size reads 4 x 4 inches.
  5. Order or print it. Choose the 4x4 print size at checkout, or print on 4x6 paper at 100% scale and trim.

How Many 4x4 Photos Fit on One Sheet?

Few home printers take 4x4 paper, so the usual trick is to print squares on a bigger sheet and cut them out. The leftover strip is exactly right for 2x2 passport photos.

How many 4x4 photos fit on a sheet: one 4x4 plus two 2x2 on 4x6 paper, four 4x4 plus four 2x2 on 8x10 and letter paper
One 4x4 plus two 2x2 photos on a 4x6 sheet; four 4x4 plus four 2x2 photos on an 8x10 or letter sheet
  • 4x6 sheet: one 4x4 plus two 2x2 photos (or a 4 x 2 strip for notes).
  • 8x10 sheet: four 4x4 photos plus four 2x2 photos.
  • 8.5 x 11 letter paper: four 4x4 photos plus four 2x2 photos, with small margins for home printers.

Need passport photos for that strip? The photo print size tool crops 2x2 photos and lays them out on a sheet with cut lines.

Printing Tips for 4x4 Photos

  • Keep faces away from the edges. Borderless printing can trim a sliver from each side, and a mat hides about 1/4 inch more.
  • Use the original file, not a screenshot or a photo saved from a messaging app, which may have far fewer pixels.
  • Choose glossy for color, matte or lustre for prints that will be handled, framed under glass or stuck on a fridge.
  • Check the preview. Most labs show which part of the photo will be printed; adjust the crop there if heads look tight.
  • Fix grain before printing. Small prints hide some noise, but a grainy night shot still shows it. Our guide on how to fix grainy photos shows how.

Mat openings are cut about 1/4 inch smaller than the print on each side so the photo does not fall through.

What Is a 4x4 Photo Used For?

  • Square social posts. Print your favorite square posts as a matching set.
  • Instant-style prints. A 4x4 with a thicker bottom border gives the instant-film look at a bigger size.
  • Coasters, tiles and magnets. The 4 x 4 size is the standard for square coasters and photo magnets.
  • Scrapbooks and journals. Squares are easy to line up in a grid on a page.
  • Square photo books and gallery walls. A grid of nine 4x4 prints makes a 12 x 12 inch block.
  • Party favors and photo booths. Square prints work well for wedding guest books and event souvenirs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is a 4x4 photo?

A 4x4 photo is 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall, a perfect square. That is 10.16 x 10.16 cm, or 101.6 x 101.6 mm, about the size of a drink coaster and a little smaller than a CD.

What is 4x4 in cm?

4x4 inches in centimeters is 10.16 x 10.16 cm, because one inch is exactly 2.54 cm. Labs that work in metric sometimes sell a 10 x 10 cm square instead, which is 1.6 mm smaller on each side.

How many pixels is a 4x4 photo?

For a sharp print at 300 DPI, a 4x4 photo needs 1200 x 1200 pixels (1.44 megapixels). At 240 DPI it needs 960 x 960 pixels, and 600 x 600 pixels (150 DPI) is the practical minimum. A 1080 x 1080 square post prints at 4x4 at about 270 DPI, which still looks good.

What aspect ratio is a 4x4 photo?

A 4x4 photo has a 1:1 aspect ratio. Square photos fit with no crop, while a 3:2 camera photo loses about a third of its width and a 4:3 phone photo loses a quarter of its width (or height, if it is vertical).

How big is 4x4 photo paper?

Paper sold for 4x4 prints is exactly 4 x 4 inches. Few home printers stock it, so most people print a 4x4 on 4x6 photo paper and trim the extra 2 inches, which also leaves room for two 2x2 photos. Set the paper size to 4 x 4 in or print at 100% scale.

What size frame fits a 4x4 photo?

A 4x4 frame holds a 4x4 print edge to edge. For a border, use a 6x6 or 8x8 frame with a mat cut for a 4x4; the mat opening is usually about 3.5 x 3.5 inches so the print does not slip through.

Is a 4x4 photo the same as a 4x4 cm photo?

No. A 4x4 photo usually means 4 x 4 inches (10.16 cm). A 4x4 cm photo is a small ID-style picture of 40 x 40 mm, or about 1.57 x 1.57 inches, which needs only about 472 x 472 pixels at 300 DPI. Always check the unit before you print.

Is 4x4 a standard print size?

Yes. 4x4 is a common square print size at photo labs and online printers, popular for square social posts, instant-style prints, coasters, magnets and scrapbooks. It is less common than 4x6 at drugstore kiosks, so check the size list before ordering.

Can I print a phone photo at 4x4?

Yes. Any modern phone photo has far more than the 1200 x 1200 pixels a 4x4 needs. Phones shoot 4:3 by default, so a quarter of the frame has to be cropped. Crop it yourself first so you choose what stays, or switch the camera to 1:1 before you shoot.
